It is B-Ball Season

If you know a little bit about me, you know that I love the game of Basketball. I fell in love with the game for some reason when I was very young. I remember one afternoon walking home from school in 3rd grade on 78th st in Raytown MO. There was a neighbor kid up the street whose dad put in a new basketball court in the backyard, it was nice! There were several of us, actually there were 6 kids there that day and I really wanted to play. Have you ever experienced being the last kid picked in a game? Yea I wish that would have happened, I was so bad they would rather play 3 against 2 then to pick me Cry. I cried all the way home. For some reason I fell in love with the game that day. One of the great gifts ever from my dad was when he – not long after that experience came home one day with a wood backboard, a rim and a b-ball. He nailed the goal up to a tree in the backyard. Within a few days the grass was gone and the ground under that goal turned hard as concrete. I got bit by the bug and I am still a lover of the game to this day. I played other sports growing up but nothing captured my heart like the round ball.

I coached for 14 years prior to becoming a youth pastor at the early age of 35, normally when guys are getting out of youth ministry! I have not picked up a whistle since my last game I coached in West Palm Beach in 98, that is until this year. My good friend Tom Ranallo talked me in to coaching the 7 & 8th grade boys at CCA, the school that Carlee and Caleb attend.  I had to adjust my mindset from HS and college where I coached before to the reality of what a 12 and 13 yr old kid can and will do. Well we have been at it for a couple of months now and I am really enjoying the experience, not sure how much the kids (or parents) are but we won a little  tournament tonight at St Christophers and I have to admit a little bit of the old adrenaline kicked in. There is not to many things more enjoyable then to take a group of kids who don't know a whole lot about how to play and get them to learn the game and to learn how to play together, to see them go from not being able to do something and then learn how to and then see the lights going off in their minds is very cool!

We had 9 games between Carlee, Caleb and me this week, so B-Ball season is in full bloom!

Can't wait till the morning, I know it is going to be frigid ( i hear 1-degree) outside but I think it's going to be cookin on the inside, in all 7 theaters!
